Sulphur spike "Squirrel" (Yellow delphinium)
Yellow delphinium "Squirrel" (Sulphur spike) - Delphinium zalil.
This beautiful fragrant plant will decorate both a small garden and a large park.
A frost-resistant perennial with a very interesting (rare for delphiniums) flower color.
It is bright yellow with a greenish tint and a yellow eye. Flowers with spurs, 2-4 cm in diameter, are collected in a multi-flowered brush up to 35 cm long. Depending on the growing conditions, the height of the plant can vary from 50 to 150 cm.
This unusually colored species tolerates cold well (winter-hardy to -20 °C), but suffers from excess moisture in winter and summer. Perfect for planting along the far edge of borders, will decorate any flower bed. It has a pleasant aroma.
SOWING: in open ground before winter in late August - early September, or on seedlings in January-March, to obtain flowering in the first year. Seeds are sown, for example, in moistened peat briquettes and kept for 1-2 weeks at +18+21 °C, then placed in the refrigerator and kept at a temperature of +5 °C for 2-3 weeks, then back in the heat. Shoots appear in the light after 2-3 weeks.
Prefers loose, well-drained soils, semi-shaded and windless places.
CARE: fertilizing, deep watering, tying up the bush. The first fertilizing, when the shoots are 10-15 cm high - complex mineral or liquid organic fertilizer. The second fertilizing during the budding period or the beginning of flowering should include a large proportion of potassium and phosphorus elements. The third fertilizing is carried out at the end of flowering, when renewal buds are laid. In this case, only potassium-phosphorus fertilizers are used, without nitrogen. After flowering, the flower stalks are cut off to induce secondary flowering in the fall. At the end of autumn, the stems are cut to the root. It is very important to ensure that there is no stagnation of water, otherwise the plant cannot be saved.
FLOWERING: May-July.
Yellow delphinium, Sulphur spike. Bot. syn.: Delphinium semibarbatum Bien. ex Boiss.
