Alpine Golden Chain (Scotch Laburnum, Alpine Laburnum)
Alpine Golden Chain - Laburnum alpinum (Mill.) Bercht. et Presl.
The homeland of this species is the mountains of Southern Europe.
Deciduous shrub from 0.5 to 3 meters high. The leaves are light green, trifoliate, up to 7 cm long. The flowers are light yellow, up to 2 cm, collected in narrow, hanging brushes up to 40 cm long.
Blooms in May-June. In the central regions of Russia, it blooms irregularly.
Laburnum alpinum differs from Laburnum anagyroides by the absence of pubescence on the back of the leaves, clearly expressed vertical growth, Laburnum alpinum blooms two weeks later than Laburnum anagyroides.
The most winter-hardy species. In severe winters, non-lignified shoots freeze.
Location: achieves best development on rich, well-drained soils containing lime, does not tolerate its compaction.
Photophilous, develops well only in sunny places.
Propagation: by seeds, layering and green cuttings, dividing the bush and grafting. But it is better to propagate this plant by seeds, since the seedlings are more resilient. The seeds have a powerful cover and require long stratification in the cellar or in the refrigerator, or they are sown before winter. Shoots appear in a month.
Summer cuttings without any preliminary preparation give a high percentage of rooting.
Use: looks good in single plantings against the background of a lawn, in sparse groups against a background of dark greenery. In solid plantings it stretches out strongly and becomes bare from below, blooms weakly.
