Harilik kukerpuu Berberis vulgaris
A branchy shrub up to 1.5 m high with erect, brownish-gray shoots, equipped with tripartite thorns up to 2 cm long, with elliptical, dark green on top, gray-green below leaves. Shiny yellow flowers with a pleasant honey aroma are collected in multi-flowered, racemose inflorescences up to 6 cm long. Flowering duration is 13-20 days. Numerous bright red fruits up to 1.2 cm long decorate plants for a long time. It grows relatively quickly, has low soil requirements, is very stable in urban conditions, tolerates pruning well. High frost resistance allows it to be successfully used in landscaping in northern countries. The bright color of autumn foliage, abundant yellow flower clusters and bright color of fruits put common barberry in a row of very decorative shrubs for creating hedges, borders, single and group plantings.
