Mediterranean dwarf palm (European fan palm)
European fan palm or the Mediterranean dwarf palm - Chamaerops humilis L.
Cold-hardy palm.
Chamerops growing as a bush can be found in almost any park or garden in the south of France, Spain and Italy. In these countries, due to the mild climate, plants can winter in open ground.
Chamaerops squat is a bushy palm tree, strongly branching from the base, reaching a height of 2-3 m. Petioles are prickly, fan-shaped, gray-green, hard, covered with easily falling gray hairs. The leaf blade together with the petiole is about 1.5 m in diameter.
The flowers are bisexual, greenish-yellow, collected in paniculate inflorescences in the axils of the leaves. The fruit is a round or oblong berry, reddish or yellowish.
Location: bright, sunny. When kept indoors, the plant must be provided with access to fresh air; in summer it is recommended to take it out into the air. In winter, the place should be bright and very cool. The plant is kept in winter at a temperature of 6-14 degrees. Shade-tolerant.
Watering: in summer, keep the soil constantly moist, avoiding excess water in the pot. In a sunny location, the plant should be watered frequently. In winter, the need for water from a palm tree is minimal.
Reproduction: early spring - seeds. Reproduction by lateral offspring of adult specimens is possible, if only the plant has them. The offspring are separated during transplantation.
