Pinus peuce
Macedonian Pine ''Jiulietta''.
Evergreen, winter-hardy and shade-tolerant tree. A spectacular slender tree up to 20 m high. The crown is pyramidal, dense, starting almost from the ground, up to 4.5 m in diameter. It grows quickly, the annual growth is 25 cm. The trunk, covered with scaly coarse gray-brown bark, is hidden to the base under lowered branches . It has beautiful and dense, dark green needles, up to 9-10 cm long (in bunches of 5), which lasts 3 years. Fruits in 10-12 years.
Cones are numerous, elongated-cylindrical, light brown, reach 10-15 cm and remain on the branches for a long time. Seeds ripen after 18 months.
It is winter-hardy and drought-resistant, moderately exacting to soil fertility, well transfers conditions of the city. Resistant to blister rust - the main disease of conifers in the city. Propagated by seeds without prior preparation (sowing in autumn), but much more successful after 2-3 months of stratification in wet sand at a temperature of + 2 + 7 ° C (when sown in spring).
Possesses the most excellent decorative qualities. It is used in the improvement of private country estates as a park plant: plantings of this pine look spectacular next to flowering and bright-fruited shrubs (cotoneaster, barberries, mock oranges, brooms, spireas), as well as in combination with white fir, spruce, juniper, beech, oaks, lindens, birches, etc. To slow down the growth of shoots, and make the crown denser, part of the annual growth of branches is cut off.
