Manchurian maple "Dmitry Donskoy"
Manchurian maple "Dmitry Donskoy" - Acer tegmentosum.
Natural habitat: Primorsky Krai, North-Eastern China and Korea.
Grows in mixed forests on fertile, well-moistened soils. Shade-tolerant.
This is a large shrub or tree up to 6 m tall, with a wide, spherical crown and a very decorative trunk covered with smooth, green bark (in young plants) with longitudinal white stripes, and grey - in adults.
No less decorative are its dark cherry branches and large pinkish buds, when they bloom, strongly hairy, elongated integumentary scales of a pink color remain for some time at the base of the leaves and young shoots, which greatly decorates the plant.
The leaves are wide, thin, large, up to 17 cm long, three-lobed, with a beautiful pattern of veins, dark green in summer and golden yellow in autumn, which in shape resemble linden. The flowers are large, greenish-yellow, in graceful hanging brushes up to 8 cm long, which bloom after the leaves have blossomed for 10-13 days.
Small, pinkish-brown winged flowers in very spectacular brushes attract attention, giving the tree a unique charm in autumn.
Winter-hardy. Grows relatively quickly. Shade-tolerant, but in cultural conditions prefers well-lit places. Moisture-loving, demanding of fertility and soil moisture, tolerates transplantation well.
Propagated by seeds: seeds are sown in autumn after collection or stored in glass (or other containers) with a tightly closing lid, or in dense fabric, paper or polyethylene bags in a cool room at 0 +5 °C and humidity of 10-15%.
Before spring sowing, stratification of seeds in a moist substrate for 4-6 months at 0 +7 °C is necessary. Sowing depth 2-2.5 cm.
Germination 70-85%. Seed viability 90%. 60% of summer cuttings take root.
Excellent honey plant. In cultivation since 1892.
Looks good in single and group plantings.
