Kniphofia tuckii (Tritoma)
Tuckiian Torch Flower - Kniphofia tuckii.
Exotic perennial herbaceous plant 80-100 cm tall. The leaves are xiphoid, grayish-green, up to 40 cm long. The upper flowers are dark pink, the lower ones are yellow.
The inflorescence is dense, spike-shaped, up to 15 cm long. Blooms from mid-summer for 50-60 days.
Light- and heat-loving, prefers slightly acidic, well-drained soils without stagnant water.
Propagated by dividing rhizomes and seeds. Shoots appear in 17-20 days.
Young plants bloom in the second or third year. The bush is divided in late April - early May.
In the conditions of Estonia, kniphofia must be well covered for the winter. In this case, the leaves are carefully tied, the stems of the inflorescences are cut off and the entire plant is covered with spruce branches or dry leaves. In spring, mineral potassium fertilizers are applied.
Kniphofia is decorative throughout the entire growing season. Looks impressive in group plantings on lawns and gravel gardens, near ponds and in mixed flower beds.
To create bouquets, inflorescences are cut at the beginning of flowering.
