Callistemon viminalis
Weeping bottlebrush
When grown indoors, it forms a rounded bush 1.5-2 m in diameter with drooping branches and narrow leaves (at home in Australia it reaches a height of up to 7 m).
The leaves are narrowly lanceolate, leathery, arranged in whorls of dark green color. The flowers are collected in a very original spiky inflorescence. The most noticeable part of the flowers are numerous stamens on red threads, similar to a “brush” for washing dishes.
The plant is photophilous, prefers a bright sunny place. Suitable for growing near south facing windows.
SOWING: Sown from August to March superficially in a previously prepared mixture of peat and sand with a neutral reaction. Crops are covered with glass or film to maintain the microclimate. Shoots will appear in a month at the optimum temperature for germination + 18 + 20 ° C. When the seedlings reach a height of 2-3 cm, they dive into pots of 7-9 cm, by the end of the year they pinch the tops.
Since seedlings grow for quite a long time, top dressing is carried out with a high nitrogen content. A month after picking in the summer months and favorable weather, seedlings can be taken outside or provide constant ventilation.
Callistemon is very photophilous, so it should be placed only on a sunny windowsill.
CARE: in spring-summer they are kept at +20+22°C, by autumn the temperature is lowered (in winter +12+16°C, but not lower than +8°C).
Watering in spring and summer is plentiful, as the topsoil dries out with settled water, in autumn and winter watering is moderate. The plant is fed during the active growing season from spring to autumn once every 2 weeks with a complex fertilizer with a low phosphorus content. Transplanted as the pot is filled with roots, about once a year, using a peat substrate with the addition of coarse sand to normalize acidity.
After the end of flowering, the bush is pruned.
FLOWERING: Spring-summer.
Plant height: 150 cm.
