According to most authors, in the European part of the country, melons of the Central Asian subspecies are highly susceptible to disease due to high air humidity, making them unsuitable for cultivation. Therefore, melon varieties of the European subspecies should be selected for greenhouse cultivation.
Melon varieties for greenhouses must combine early maturity, high yield, good fruit flavor, and resistance to adverse greenhouse conditions. Greenhouse varieties must have flesh no thinner than 3 cm with a sugar content of at least 7-8%. However, early-ripening varieties with good fruit flavor are still few in number. Therefore, in winter-spring cultivation under low-light conditions, mid-season varieties with very high fruit flavor are typically grown, while in later seasons, early maturity requirements become more important.
In European greenhouses, three melon varieties are most widely grown: Charente, Galia and Augen.
