Seeds germinate at the optimum temperature of +20+30°C within 10 days. Plant out outdoors when danger of frost has passed.
Prefers rich, light soils, sunny location. For medicinal purposes, the aerial part of the plant is used.
In dry sunny weather, before flowering or during flowering, shoots 10-14 cm long are harvested, dried in the shade in well-ventilated places.
For the entire growing season, cutting is repeated two or three times. The flowering period of basil is very extended, and the seeds do not ripen at the same time, so the collection is carried out selectively.

Features of growing basil.
Basil is grown by direct sowing of seeds into the soil or through seedlings. Propagation by cuttings is possible.
In open ground in Estonia and further north, basil can only be grown through seedlings. In regions where the soil does not have enough moisture, the seedling method is also used.
Growing basil through seedlings.
Seedlings can be grown in cassettes with 54 cells (515 x 300 x 50 mm, cell volume 85 ml, seedling density 318 plants/m2) or in cassettes with 64 cells (410 x 410 x 50 mm, cell volume 85 ml, seedling density 380 plants/m2). A ready-made seedling mixture is used as a substrate. Sow 1–2 seeds in each cell depending on their germination, water and keep at a temperature of +25+27 °C. Seedlings appear in 7 days. In the phase of the first pair of leaves, one young plant is left in the cell. When basil plants reach a height of 1–2 cm, you can pinch the top to stimulate lateral branching. Seedling care consists of watering and fertilizing. Plants are planted in open ground 4–6 weeks after emergence, when they reach a height of 10–15 cm and have 4–6 pairs of leaves. Seedlings are planted when the threat of frost has passed, the soil has warmed up and the air temperature does not drop below +15 °C during the day.
