GROWING TIPS
1. Seedling Method (Transplanting).
Don't be afraid to transplant beets! Sow thickly. When seedlings develop leaves about 3 cm long, carefully transplant them into a loose bed spaced 8-10 cm apart. Shade them from the sun for the first few days. Beets tolerate transplanting very well. You can plant them as borders or in spaces left after harvesting radishes.
2. Direct Sowing.
* Timing: Early spring (for summer use) and summer until mid-July (for winter storage). Soil temp should be +7+10°C.
* Seed Prep: Soaking speeds up germination, but never sow soaked seeds in cold or dry soil.
* Companions: Beets grow very well next to carrots — this actually improves the taste and quality of the beets.
3. Care and Thinning.
Beet seeds are clusters producing 4-5 sprouts, so thinning is crucial:
1st thinning: At the first true leaf stage (leave 1-2 cm).
2nd thinning: At 4-5 leaves (leave 3-4 cm).
Final thinning: 25-30 days later (leave 6-8 cm between roots).
It is advisable to fertilize during the second and third thinning.
4. Harvesting.
Harvest late in autumn before frosts. Clean off soil and trim leaves. Do not damage the head of the root crop, as this reduces storage life.
