Feathertop grass - Pennisetum villosum.
In nature, it grows on rocky slopes, screes and cliffs in the mountains of East Africa.
A perennial plant 30-60 cm tall, forming dense turf. In the climatic conditions of Estonia, it is grown as an annual.
Leaf blades are 0.3-0.5 cm wide, flat. Panicles are spike-shaped, 3-10 cm long, ovoid or short-cylindrical, very dense, golden. Spikelets in groups of 1-4, surrounded by numerous pinnate-hairy bristles up to 4-5 cm long. Blooms in late summer.
It is better to grow in containers, since even with the earliest sowing of seeds in the first year of life, it blooms very late.
Growth: prefers a sunny location, especially in regions with a cool climate.
Soil: from moderately damp to moist, rich in humus. Does not tolerate too dry, dense or sandy soils!
Care: very thermophilic. In moderate climates, they are grown as annuals or in containers. During the growing season, pennisetums require timely weeding, loosening, fertilizing (once every two to three weeks with a complete complex fertilizer) and watering during drought.
Perennial species in Estonia do not tolerate winter temperatures, so they can be grown in containers that are taken out into the garden in the summer and then put in a bright room in the fall before frost.
Use: annual pennisetums are sown in mixborders, ornamental gardens, near fences or buildings. They make beautiful hedges and arrays. They look beautiful with low carpets of plants and near trees. They are very good in single plantings in the background. They look very decorative in patios, on terraces, near lawns or ponds, and are used for cutting for live and dried bouquets.
Partners: yellow roses, yarrow, veronica, solidago, catnip.
