* CARE OF CUCUMBERS IN THE GREENHOUSE.
Every gardener knows well that cucumbers are among the most picky plants when it comes to heat and humidity. Moreover, at different phases of their development they require “their own” temperature.
After the seedlings take root and begin to grow, the temperature must be maintained at +25+28°C in sunny weather and +22+24°C in cloudy weather, and at night - at least +18°C, and with the start of fruiting at night optimal temperature +22°C. We must remember that it is at night that the most intensive growth of fruits occurs.
Overheating of the air during the day worsens the conditions for air nutrition of plants. And when the temperature rises above +35+36°C, the pollen of the flowers becomes unviable, the flowers are poorly pollinated, and the ovary falls off. Therefore, on hot days in the greenhouse, it is necessary to open all the windows and doors, but avoid drafts, which cucumbers cannot tolerate.
Cucumbers tolerate low temperatures even worse. At temperatures below +15 degrees, plant growth stops and flowers fall off. And when the temperature drops at night to +7+8°C and below, some of the small roots may die, and the root system will not be able to replenish the loss of water with a further significant increase in temperature during the day.
Remember how many times you have seen that after long-term low temperatures, when the long-awaited hot weather sets in, your pets suddenly begin to wither and sometimes die.
Air humidity in a greenhouse is no less important than temperature. In the greenhouse it should be 85-90% on sunny days, and 75-85% on cloudy days. With such air humidity, the plant develops better.
To solve these problems, it is necessary to install two 200-liter iron barrels with water, painted black, at both ends of the greenhouse. These containers will become your “accumulator” of heat and a regulator of temperature and air humidity. During the day, the air will heat this water and give it its heat. And at night, barrels of water, heated to 60-65 degrees during the day, will prevent the air temperature in the greenhouse from dropping sharply.
And in order to maintain high air humidity in the greenhouse, there is no need to cover these barrels with lids. Among other things, these water containers are also convenient for watering, because... The water temperature in them is always high.
If necessary, air humidity is increased with “poultices”, pouring water on all passages in the greenhouse in sunny weather and closing all the windows for 1 hour...
