A very decorative perennial from the Asteraceae family, 0.9-1.5 m tall. Lanceolate thin basal leaves. Small purple flowers are collected in long apical inflorescences.
Stems are erect, bare, rigid, grooved. Leaves up to 10 cm long, 0.5 cm wide, crowded, lower leaves are lanceolate, upper ones are narrowly linear, evenly decreasing up the stem, pointed, with a curled edge, rigid. This is a hardy prairie plant, capable of thriving on hard clay soils and in the summer heat.
Special characteristics: dense flower heads.
Blooms in July-September. Dry-loving. Very photophilous. Frost-resistant to -40°C (Z3 - Z8). In cultivation since 1732. Excellent for cutting.
