Hairy Melic "Silky" - Melica ciliata.
Silky-spike melic is a spring grass with flower stalks about 40 cm tall, forming dense, spike-shaped panicles. The silky flowers contrast beautifully with the graceful gray-green foliage.
Origin: Europe, North Africa, and Southwest Asia.
Flower color: silvery-gray.
Hardiness zones: Z5 - Z8.
Soil requirements: dry, calcareous, well-drained, low-nutrient soil.
Hairy melic is a perennial herbaceous plant with a dense, densely clump-like growth habit and a short, creeping, branched rhizome. The stem is slender and smooth, the panicle awn is rough. The leaves are narrow, linear, rolled lengthwise, and glabrous.
The inflorescence is a dense, spike-shaped, cylindrical panicle bearing fruit. The lower lemmas are rough, covered with long, almost horizontal hairs. The seeds are dark brown, almost black, and slightly shiny. Propagated by seeds and division.
An ideal companion for spring bulbs, as it perfectly camouflages their fading leaves. Used in ornamental gardening, it looks beautiful in dried bouquets. It is also used for rooftop greening.
1.0 g = 2100 seeds.

Eng.: Hairy Melic, Silky-spike melic. Bot. syn.: Melica nebrodensis.
