* Sowing pepper seeds.
Fill seed trays or individual pots (preferred, because peppers do not tolerate transplanting well) with a mix of the following composition:
1) 7 parts well-decomposed peat, 2 parts manure humus, 1 part sod soil, 1 part mullein; per bucket of mix add 8 g ammonium nitrate, 80 g superphosphate, 30 g potassium salt; mix thoroughly;
2) 2 parts well-decomposed peat, 2 parts humus and 1 part fine wood sawdust; per bucket of mix add 1 tbsp wood ash and 1 tbsp superphosphate; mix thoroughly.
Sowing dates depend on where and how you will grow the seedlings: if you plan to grow peppers under any type of cover, sow already in February; if outdoors, calculate so that the seedlings are 60–65 days old at planting time. Fill boxes with a 6–8 cm layer of mix, level it, lightly firm it, and make furrows 5 cm apart. Sow seeds 1.0–1.5 cm deep, spacing them 2 cm apart, then cover with soil.
Cover the boxes with glass or plastic film and place them in a warm spot (+22 to +25°C) until emergence, then remove the cover. Keep the seedlings on a sunny windowsill for 6–7 days at +15 to +17°C. After that, gradually raise the temperature to +20 to +25°C during the day and +16 to +17°C at night. Water with settled water warmed to +22 to +25°C about once a week. After about a month (when seedlings have 2 true leaves), seedlings grown in boxes are pricked out (potted on).
