Siberian Columbine - Aquilegia sibirica Lam.
Distributed in Western and Eastern Siberia, enters adjacent areas of Central Asia and northwestern Mongolia. It grows in mountain forest and floodplain meadows up to the alpine belt. In the Altai Mountains it is distributed in pine forests along the Katun River.
Second year flowering; for the rockgarden; flowers for cutting; brilliant blue with white corolla, very large flowering.
The bush is luxurious, multi-stemmed, with beautiful reddish-green openwork leaves. Perennial plant 30-60 cm high. Trifoliate leaves. The flowers are up to 5 cm in diameter, lilac-blue, rarely almost white or with yellowness at the ends of the petals, the spurs are rather thin and short. Blooms from the end of May for 20-25 days. The seeds ripen in the second half of July, after which the leaves begin to gradually turn yellow and die. Does not bloom again. In culture since 1806.
Frost resistance zones: Z2-7.
This species does not suffer from heat. Tolerates any location that is not too dry. It grows into lush, profusely flowering bushes and deserves the widest attention and cultivation. More durable than glandular columbine. Has the "Alba" variety with white flowers.
