Agrotechnics.
Good tobacco will grow only where it is warm, but not too hot (tobacco tolerates temperatures below +15 degrees poorly, and dies completely below -3 degrees). Tobacco does not tolerate drought, but it also does not tolerate excess moisture. Light, loose, sandy soils with a slightly acidic reaction are desirable for it.
Seeds are planted in special trays with depressions and kept under film for about 10-15 days.
Tobacco seedlings should be planted out very carefully: even slight damage to the roots can lead to the death of the tobacco bush. If the plants are planted too far apart, the leaves become large, dense, with a high content of aromatic substances. And if the plants stand close to each other, the leaves turn out to be smaller and thinner (which is good for cigarette tobacco).
Harvesting (of leaves) usually begins 2-3 months after planting the seedlings in the ground. The moisture content of a freshly picked leaf is about 85%, and tobacco is considered marketable when its moisture content is approximately 12-15%. Drying is done alternately in the sun and in a warm, dry, periodically ventilated room. During drying, various processes occur in the tobacco leaf, as a result of which the color of the leaves changes to yellow and brown.
A dry tobacco leaf is a semi-finished product that has yet to go through the final, one of the most crucial stages of preparation - fermentation.
As a result of fermentation, starch and other carbohydrates are converted into sugar, the nicotine content is lowered, and protein compounds break down into simpler substances.
In general, tobacco fermentation is carried out as follows. Dried tobacco is tied into bunches, and bunches into sheaves, in the center of which tubes for a thermometer are placed.
As soon as the temperature reaches +55+60 degrees Celsius, the sheaves are dismantled, which leads to rapid cooling of the tobacco. Then the sheaf is reassembled, but only those bunches that were in the center are placed closer to the edges of the sheaves, and vice versa. The temperature inside the sheaves begins to rise again, although slower than the first time. When the temperature reaches 60 degrees Celsius, the procedure of sorting the sheaves is repeated. This continues until the temperature of the sheaves stops rising, which in practice means 5-6 repackings.
