Wild calla lily (bog arum)
Marsh calla (water arum, wild calla) - Calla palustris.
It grows along marshy shores and in sedge bogs in the temperate zone of Europe, Asia and North America.
The rhizome is thick, jointed, creeping, green, located on the surface of the soil. The leaves on vegetative shoots are single, large, and on flowering shoots they are collected in a rosette.
The leaf blade is broad-heart-shaped, pointed, smooth and shiny, with arcuate veins, 6-14 cm long and 5-11 cm wide. The leaf petioles are long, up to 24 cm, with a long sheath at the base. The peduncle is equal in height to the leaves. The spadix is oblong-cylindrical. The inflorescence cover is flat, ovoid with a narrow point at the apex, green on the outside, white on the inside. The fruits are bright red berries. The entire plant is poisonous when fresh.
Blooms from mid-May to late June.
Winter hardiness zones: Z4 – Z9.
Height with flowers: 25 cm.
Location: if you plant it in a sunny place in calm water, its shiny heart-shaped leaves up to 20 cm wide will completely cover the banks of the pond, so it is recommended to plant it in garden ponds with a hard surface. Tolerates temporary drying of the reservoir.
Soil: requires silty or clayey, nutritious soil.
Planting: planted to a depth of 5-10 cm. To avoid water blooms, the plant can be planted not in mesh containers, but in ordinary pots or containers with holes only at the bottom. Such a container is filled with soil, which is covered with a 2-centimeter layer of oily clay on top to prevent nutrients from being washed out into the water. The plants will grow, and some of them will hang outside the container, where the additionally formed roots will receive nutrients from the water, improving their quality.
Care: the plant forms a dense carpet that suppresses everything around it. Grows quickly but is easy to control. Shoots that go beyond the boundaries should be cut off.
