Sugar Peas. Pisum sativum L. convar. medullare Alef. emend C.O. Lehm.

* Peas are an annual plant, the richest source of protein substances. Beans in technical maturity have up to 5-6% protein, as well as a number of amino acids and vitamins vital for humans. Green peas contain 80% water, 13% carbohydrates, 1% fiber, 0.7% ash. Its caloric content is 1.5-2 times higher than that of other vegetables. Pea seeds are large, the weight of 1000 pcs is 150-400 g.
Soil.
Peas need humus-rich, light, non-acidic soil. Fertilize moderately: excess nitrogen is more harmful than beneficial to pea growth. Sow in an open area where legumes have not been grown in the previous 2 years. The soil is dug up in the fall, adding 2 buckets of well-rotted manure or compost per square meter of area. Shortly before sowing, add a complex fertilizer to the soil.
Care.
The soil around the plants is regularly loosened, weeds are pulled out. When the plants reach a height of 8 cm, pegs are stuck in next to each one; young plants that have fallen to the ground may be damaged by slugs. Ropes or plastic mesh are stretched along the rows of medium- and tall-growing pea varieties. Water in summer drought. To retain moisture in the soil, the inter-rows are mulched with mown grass or weeded weeds. To protect the crop from the pea moth, 7-10 days after the beginning of flowering, the plantings are sprayed with fenitrothion.
Harvesting.
To obtain green peas, the fruits are removed when the seeds have already formed, but the beans themselves are not yet very swollen. * First, pick the lower beans, then the beans growing closer to the top of the plant.
* When harvesting, hold the stem of the plant with one hand.
* To increase the yield, the fruits are picked regularly, not allowing them to ripen on the bush.
* Peas that cannot be used immediately are stored in the refrigerator or frozen.
* After harvesting, the stems are placed in compost, the roots are left in the ground.
* To obtain grain, the beans are left to ripen on the bush.
* In damp weather, the plants are pulled out of the ground and hung under a canopy to ripen.
* Sugar varieties are picked on a spatula when the beans reach 8 cm in length and the seeds are just beginning to form.
* Winged peas are harvested when the beans reach 2.5-4 cm in length.
