* Sunflower belongs to the Asteraceae family, being a “star” plant. But if many plants from this glorious family can be called stars, then the sunflower is a real superstar in this flower show!
Noticing the constant following of the sunflower inflorescence by the sun, the Indians endowed it with magical properties and used it in religious rituals. They introduced this plant into cultivation about 3 thousand years ago. They used raw seeds and bread made from sunflower flour for food.
Sunflowers were brought to Europe from Mexico at the beginning of the 16th century. It was grown for a long time as an ornamental plant, and only many years later the economic value of its seeds was discovered. In Germany, a coffee surrogate was prepared from roasted and ground seeds.
A special property of sunflower oil is its ability to remove cholesterol from the body. It is used to make margarine, drying oil, varnishes, soap, stearin, linoleum, and waterproof fabrics. The cake remaining after squeezing out the oil serves as good feed for animals. Halva is obtained from grated seeds. Sunflower contains up to 1000 flowers in an inflorescence and is a good honey plant.
Currently, much attention is again being paid to the decorative qualities of sunflower. Of the 108 species of this plant, varieties of perennial species, which are few in number, and annuals with more decorative (yellow, orange, brown and bicolor) flower colours are used in landscape design. Perennials in cultivation reach a height of only 1.2-1.8 m, and flowers do not exceed 5-9 cm in diameter. Annual plants can be either giants (4-5 m) or not exceed 40 cm.
