How to properly use peat from the package?
It would seem that everything is simple: open the bag and take the required amount of peat...
But this should not be done, since any peat substrate from the package must first be poured into a large container and mixed well so that the mineral fertilizers in the substrate are evenly distributed.
After that, water the peat so that when you squeeze it in a handful, the water between your fingers becomes noticeable, but does not spread. Let the moistened substrate rest for at least a day. Then use peat as needed.
How do you know if peat is good?
* Peat substrate purchased last year is not recommended, as it is suitable only if stored in a dry, dark place, at low temperatures, but not in frost.
* If moisture got into last year's open bag or it was heated in the sun, then peat loses its useful properties and it is better not to use it.
* Also, during the season, the peat bag cannot be kept in the sun, as the contents of the bag can overheat and get wet: during the day it heats up in the sun, and in the evening it cools down - condensation forms from the temperature difference, which can moisten the entire contents of the bag. Under the influence of moisture and heat, peat dies, so the fertilizers added to it react, as a result of which the stale substrate can even become harmful to plants.

It is important to know:
• For sowing seeds, a peat substrate of fine fraction (0-7 mm) is required.
• The middle fraction of peat substrate (7-20 mm) is best suited for growing seedlings in pots.
• Coarse peat substrate (20-40 mm) is intended for growing seedlings in containers.
• Before using the peat, it is advisable to warm it up for 1-2 days at a constant room temperature.
