Watermelon "Ogonjok" - Citrullus lanatus.
Super early!
One of the most popular early ripening varieties (71-87 days).
The fruit is spherical, smooth, dark green, with barely noticeable stripes, weighing about 1.7–2.5 kg.
The plant is short- or medium-climbing. The length of the main vine does not exceed 1.8 m. The stem is thin, round in shape, slightly pubescent. The leaf is small, strongly dissected, with narrow lobes. The bark is thin and fragile. The pulp is orange-red, granular, tender, juicy, sweet. The taste is very good.
Designed for cultivation in film greenhouses and in open ground. Marketable yield is 2-3 kg/m2. Relatively resistant to anthracnose, moderately affected by powdery mildew.
Growing conditions.
Watermelon is a light- and heat-loving crop. In the climatic conditions of Estonia it is grown by seedlings. Sowing seedlings at the end of April.
The seeds are soaked in water for a day. Sow 2-3 seeds in a peat pot to a depth of 3 cm a month before planting in the ground. At an optimal temperature of +25+30°C, seedlings appear in 10-14 days. The period for growing seedlings is 30-35 days. They are planted in open ground when the threat of return frosts has passed. Place in a place protected from cold winds. Planting pattern 70x150 cm.
The plants are tied to a trellis, all side shoots are removed to a height of 50 cm, and subsequent shoots are pinched over 1-3 leaves. It is possible to grow in a free culture spread out. Watering is moderate, especially during the period of fruit ripening.
Care: timely weeding, fertilizing, watering as needed.
