Watermelon "Sweet Siberian".
An old mid-season variety originally from Siberia.
The fruits of this heirloom Siberian variety reach 40 cm in length and weigh up to 4 kg. The light green rind hides juicy yellow flesh. The seeds are small and brown.
Shape: Elongated.
Flesh color: Yellow.
Vine length: 100–200 cm.
In cultivation since 1898.
History: This heirloom variety was first introduced by Peter Henderson in 1898. It was later preserved and re-introduced by Glenn Drowns at the Seed Savers Exchange in 1987.
Agrotechnics (Cultivation).
Seeds are sown for seedlings in late April. Seeds germinate well at a temperature of +20°C; the first true leaf forms 3-5 days after germination. Pots with seedlings are placed on a bright windowsill. Watering with cold water is not recommended. Lowering the temperature (below +16°C) leads to the death of seedlings.
Watermelon seedlings are planted in greenhouses or hotbeds in late May - early June. When planting, do not bury the root collar (it should remain at soil level). The distance between plants in a row is 30-40 cm, between rows - 60-70 cm. At the time of planting, water the holes abundantly and slightly moisten the top layer of soil around the plants.
