Dryas drummondii

A North American arctic species, growing above the timberline on rocky ridges, scree slopes, and occasionally at lower elevations along mountain streams in Alaska, Washington, northeastern Oregon, and Montana.
The stiff, dense, creeping stems form a groundcover 50 cm across. The leaves are overwintering, leathery, oval, with a serrated edge. The outer side of the leaves is glossy, the inner side is silvery-tomentose.
It blooms in late spring. Stems are 5-20 cm tall. The flowers are solitary, pale or bright yellow, cup-shaped, up to 2.5 cm in diameter.
As a rule, only individual flowers open fully. Repeat blooming is possible in summer and fall. After flowering, it forms feathery, fluffy catkins.
Dryas drummondii has two varieties, var. eglandulosa and var. tomentosa. Some descriptions list Dryas drummondii "Grandiflora", but this name refers to either Dryas octopetala "Grandiflora" or a form of Dryas x suendermannii.
