Snake's head fritillary (Guinea-hen flower, snake's head fritillary, turkey hen) - Fritillaria meleagris.
The plant is up to 35 cm tall. The leaves are linear-lanceolate, narrowed, blunt at the end. The flowers are single, rarely two, bell-shaped, drooping, reddish-brown with a clear checkerboard pattern, up to 2.5 cm in diameter. It blooms in late spring for 2-3 weeks. The bulb is up to 2 cm in diameter, flattened. In cultivation since 1519.
This species is propagated by adult bulbs, babies, which are formed in large quantities, and seeds (the white form produces few seeds), and the period from sowing seeds to flowering seedlings takes 3 years.
Fritillaria chequeredata can grow in one place for several years. An excellent plant for naturalization. Usually its bulbs are dug up when it is necessary to propagate the plant. A moisture-loving species. It is advisable not to store dug up bulbs for a long time. Winter hardiness zones 3-7, feels great in Estonian conditions.
