Perennial plant, cultivated as a biennial or annual. Stems are powerful, branched from the base, 80-250 cm high. Leaves are large, up to 10 cm in diameter.
Stems and leaves are rough-hairy. Flowers are large, double, up to 12 cm in diameter, collected in long racemose inflorescences, sometimes numbering up to 150 flowers.
Blooms in July-September, in the second year after sowing. Bears fruit abundantly. Seeds retain their germination for 2-3 years.
Homeland: Caucasus, Balkan Peninsula and the island of Crete. In cultivation since 1440.
