Sikkim rusty cucumber (Himalayan cucumber) - Cucumis sativus var. sikkimensis.
An annual climbing liana.
This is an annual herbaceous fast-growing plant, with strongly branching creeping, pubescent stems up to 2 m long, with numerous tendrils.
This cucumber is grown both as a vegetable and as an ornamental crop. Its flowers are yellow, large, dioecious, and the leaves are similar to cucumber leaves, but larger.
The abundance of flowers and original leaves makes it an exclusively ornamental plant for trellises, fences, gazebos and balconies.
The fruits are oval, reddish-brown, 10-20 cm long, 4-6 cm in diameter, covered with a network of cracks, which makes them very similar to miniature "tanned" melons.
The fruit weighs about 200 g.
Young fruits delight with their mild taste and lack of bitterness, they are eaten raw, boiled or pickled, used like regular cucumbers. Ripe fruits are used for decorative compositions.
Agrotechnics: heat-, light-, moisture-loving. The plant prefers fertile, well-drained soils and protected from direct cold winds.
Sowing: it is advisable to grow through seedlings. The day before sowing, the seeds are soaked in a solution of growth stimulants (for example: "Epin"), then - sowed in peat-humus pots.
Growing seedlings is the same as for cucumbers. Seedlings are planted in the ground at the age of 20-25 days, placing them near supports according to the 60x20 cm scheme, deepening to the cotyledons.
Care: 4-5 top dressings are carried out per season, alternating organic and mineral fertilizers. If there is a lack of moisture in the soil, abundant watering with warm water is necessary. When the first ovary appears, the tops of all the vines are pinched.
