Rocky mountain penstemon "Bandera" (Rocky mountain beardtongue) - Penstemon strictus Benth. Habroanthus = Penstemon strictiformis Rydb. (ssp.)
Origin: Southwestern North America.
One of the lightest penstemons in cultivation.
Frost-resistant: winter hardiness zones Z3-8.
Flowering plant height: 45 cm.
Leaves are smooth, oblong-lanceolate, stem sessile.
The flowers are blue, blue-violet collected in spectacular spike-shaped inflorescences that appear in mid-summer. Corolla 25-30 mm long.
It spreads by underground stolons, forming dense thickets. It tolerates partial shade, is not picky about soils, but prefers calcareous ones.
The main condition for successful cultivation is good drainage.
It is better to sow before winter. When spring sowing, stratification is required within 4-6 weeks.
