Homeland: East Asia, Australia (fresh meadow soils).
Perennial herbaceous plant. It looks beautiful thanks to its long, delicate, pretty inflorescences even in winter. In the garden, it is better to use not a species, but its best varieties.
Forms a wide bush 40-100 cm tall. The leaf is narrow, linear, juicy green, and in autumn - golden yellow. Inflorescences from light to reddish brown, small, collected in dense, brush-like spikes at the end of an arcuate stem.
The foxtail clover is not as sissy as its counterparts, and can even winter in Estonia under cover of leaves or spruce branches.
Flowers for cutting.
Natural flowering period: VIII-X.
Flowering plant height: 50 cm.
Climatic zones of winter hardiness: Z5-9.
Growing: prefers a sunny location, especially in regions with a cool climate.
Soil: from moderately damp to moist, rich in humus. Does not tolerate too dry, dense or sandy soils!
Care: very thermophilic. In moderate climates, they are grown as annuals or in containers. During the growing season, pennisetums require timely weeding, loosening, fertilizing (once every two to three weeks with a complete complex fertilizer) and watering during drought. Perennial species in Estonia do not tolerate winter temperatures, so they can be grown in containers that are taken out into the garden in the summer, and in the fall, before frost, they are removed to a light room.
Application: annual pennisetums are sown in mixborders, ornamental gardens, near fences or buildings. They make beautiful hedges and arrays. They look beautiful with low carpets of plants and near trees. They are very good in single plantings in the background.
They look very decorative in patios, on terraces, near lawns or ponds, and are used for cutting for live and dry bouquets.
Partners: yellow roses, yarrows, veronica, solidago, catnip.
Chinese fountain grass. Bot. syn.: Panicum alopecuroides L.
