Shellflower "Bells of Ireland" (Molucca balm) - Molucella laevis.
An original addition to a summer bouquet.
Unpretentious annual.
Sowing time: March.
planting seedlings: May.
Flowering: June, July, August.
Planting method: seedlings.
Plant height: 60-90 cm.
Distance between plants: 45 cm.
An interesting plant with original inflorescences. Branched stems 60-90 cm high with leaves rounded and jagged along the edges. The flowers are small, white, weakly fragrant, immersed in an overgrown pale green calyx, which is shaped like a funnel. Collected in a dense spike-shaped inflorescence. Blooms from late June to autumn.
Used for mixborders, where it serves as a green background for other crops. But the main use is as a cut flower for summer bouquets, an original addition to garden flowers. A wonderful plant for winter compositions. When dried, the flower calyxes remain green.
Agrotechnics.
The plant prefers fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny or slightly shaded location. Grown by seedlings. Sowing is done at the end of March, the seeds are sprinkled with a 0.5 cm layer of sand, germinated on a light windowsill, but shaded from direct sunlight. At a soil temperature of +10+20°C, seedlings appear in 14-30 days.
The plant is cold-resistant, so crops are kept at +13+16°C. In May, seedlings are planted in the ground at a distance of 45 cm and covered when there is a threat of frost.
Use: molucella is used in mixborders, where it serves as a green background for other crops. But the main use is as a cut flower for summer bouquets as an original addition to the usual garden flowers.
A wonderful plant for winter compositions. When dried, the flower calyxes retain their green color. For this purpose, the molucella is pulled out by the roots when all the calyxes in the inflorescence open. The stems are hung upside down in a cool, ventilated, shaded room. From dried plants, remove wrinkled leaves and trim the roots. On overdried stems, the calyxes break off.
